{"id":1236,"date":"2013-06-02T23:33:25","date_gmt":"2013-06-03T03:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markkirkwood.com\/?p=1236"},"modified":"2013-06-03T23:02:34","modified_gmt":"2013-06-04T03:02:34","slug":"foundations-of-group-behavior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.markkirkwood.com\/?p=1236","title":{"rendered":"Foundations of group behavior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DEFINING AND CLASSIFYING GROUPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <strong>group<\/strong> [within an organization&#8217;s structure] is defined here as two or more individuals, interacting and interdependent, who have come together to achieve particular objectives.<\/p>\n<p>To begin, <strong>&#8220;Why do people join groups?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 12px;\"><strong>Security<\/strong>. By joining a group, individuals can reduce the insecurity of &#8220;standing alone.&#8221; People feel stronger, have fewer self-doubts, are more resistant to threats when they are part of a group.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Status<\/strong>. Inclusion in a group that is viewed as important by others provides recognition and status for its members.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Self-esteem<\/strong>. Groups can provide people with feelings of self-worth,. That is, in addition to conveying status to those outside the group, membership can also give increased feelings of worth to the group members themselves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Affiliation<\/strong>. Groups can fulfill social needs. People enjoy the regular interaction hat comes with group membership. For many people, these on-the-job interactions are their primary source for fulfilling their needs for affiliation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Power<\/strong>. What cannot be achieved individually often becomes possible through group action\u2014i.e., there is power in numbers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Goal achievement<\/strong>. There are times when it takes more than one person to accomplish a particular task\u2014there is a need to pool talents, knowledge, or power in order to accomplish a job. In such instances, management will rely on the use of a formal group &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Some common\/classic group classes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 12px;\">command group<\/span><\/li>\n<li>task group<\/li>\n<li>interest group<\/li>\n<li>friendship group<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>GROUP DECISION MAKING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The belief\u2014characterized by juries\u2014that two heads are better than one has long been accepted as a basic component\/tenet of the U.S. legal system and those of many other countries. Today, many decisions in organizations are made by groups, teams, or committees.<\/p>\n<p>Groups versus the individual<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Strengths<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 12px;\">groups generate <em>more complete information and knowledge<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li>offer<em> increased diversity of views<\/em><\/li>\n<li>increased <em>acceptance of a solution<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Weaknesses<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 12px;\">they&#8217;re <em>time consuming<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li>there are <em>conformity pressures<\/em><\/li>\n<li>can be <em>dominated by one or a few members<\/em><\/li>\n<li>suffer from <em>ambiguous responsibility<\/em> i.e., who is accountable for the final outcome &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Group decisions are generally more <em>accurate<\/em>, while in terms of <em>speed<\/em>, individuals are superior.
